Section and Branch Local Geotechnical Groups

As a 21st Century professional organization, the G-I aims to collaborate with local, national, and international geo-professional organizations. To meet that goal, the G-I's Sections and Branches Council has developed a strategic plan for outreach to local geotechnical groups.

If your section or branch geotechnical group has an upcoming event, announcement, correction, or suggestions for this page, please send it to Linda Bayer, Geo-Institute Manager and liaison to the G-I Sections and Branches Council.

How to Transform an Existing Geotechnical Technical Group
into a G-I Chapter (adapted from the Task Committee - Institute Affiliation with Local Groups report)

Local Geo-Institute Chapters may only be established by mutual arrangements between the Geo-Institute and the respective local Sections and their Branches. Agreements need to be formalized in writing and require the action of both the Institute and Local Section Governing Boards. Sections and branches can benefit by leveraging the national name recognition of the Geo-Institute to increase participation at the Section and Branch level. We are using our national resources to create high-quality publications, programs, conferences, and continuing education, with the goal of becoming the most important source of technical information within the geo-profession. A guidance document is available to assist interested Sections and Branches or Local Technical Groups in transforming Local Technical Groups to Local Institute Chapters. A separate guidance document is available if a Section or Branch does not have an existing Geotechnical Technical Group for which they would like to create a Geo-Institute Chapter.

Geo-Institute Speakers Bureau

The purpose of this site is to provide members of the Geo-Institute, including local Sections and Branches, with a database of G-I members who are willing to make presentations on specific geotechnical topics.

Geotechnical Practice Publications

The Geo-Institute Board of Governors approved a new category of publication, Geotechnical Practice Publications (GPPs). These publications offer the opportunity for sections/branches to publish proceedings to a larger audience with a shorter, less restrictive peer review process than that for Geotechnical Specialty Publications (PDF). We invite you to review the attached white paper on Geotechnical Practice Publications and to contact Carol Bowers, the G-I Director, at 703-295-6352 for additional information.

Geo-Institute Sections and Branches Council

The Geo-Institute Sections and Branches Council mission is to be the best source of information concerning practice oriented geo-programs by maintaining routine, active and constructive interaction between the Geo-Institute and the Geotechnical groups of the Sections and Branches and their members.

Join a Geo-Institute Technical Committee

The Geo-Institute Technical Coordination Council invites all G-I members to apply for membership in one of the G-I technical committees. All geo-professionals, including new and younger members, and geo-professionals from local sections and branches of ASCE, are encouraged to participate. Technical committee members are expected to participate in committee activities and attend at least one committee meeting during the time of appointment.

ASCE Task Committee on Institute Affiliation with Local Groups

In January 2003, ASCE's Executive Committee established a task committee charged with defining the range of relationships that will be available for the Institutes to establish with Sections and Branches. The Task Committee addressed how ASCE Institute members can be served by Institutes partnering with Section and Branches, their technical groups and other allied organizations.
