Graduate students at any U. S. college or university, who are also individual student members of the Geo-Institute, are encouraged to form a Graduate Student Organization at their university.

Members of student organizations must be active student members of the Geo-Institute. No dues are paid to the Geo-Institute by these organizations and they are permitted to engage in appropriate activities to raise funds to support activities.

Each student organization faculty advisor receives a certificate certifying membership as a graduate student organization suitable for display and an appointment letter, signed by the President of the Geo-Institute. The Geo-Institute Board, or its designated representative committee, may organize activities for student organizations at specialty conferences, ASCE annual conventions, or elsewhere, that involve paper competitions, professional education and similar activities. The Geo-Institute will have a link from its homepage to the GSO's homepage.

The function of local student organizations is the enhancement of the education of students who are preparing to become geo-professionals. These organizations engage in activities of their choice as long as such activities do not violate the code of ethics of the Geo-Institute.
