Three G-I Members Honored at the Outstanding Projects and Leaders 2004 (OPAL) Awards Dinner
On May 12, 2004 in McLean, VA, 3 of the 5 ASCE members honored for their lifetime achievements to the civil engineering profession were also Geo-Institute members. "The OPAL honorees have not only advanced our profession greatly, but have also made outstanding contributions toward the health, safety and economy of our nation and the world," said ASCE president Patricia D. Galloway, P.E., F.ASCE. "Their vision, leadership and expertise has inspired us and led to a better quality of life for every citizen." The Geo-Institute salutes these three G-I members for their outstanding contributions to the profession.
Harl P. Aldrich, Jr., P.E., Ph.D., a founding principal and the chairman emeritus of Haley & Aldrich, Inc. received the Lifetime Achievement in Management Award. Aldrich is a nationally recognized authority in the field of geotechnical engineering with more than 40 years of experience.
G. Wayne Clough, P.E., Ph.D., the president of the Georgia Institute of Technology since 1994, received the Lifetime Achievement in Education Award. Clough has been recognized for his teaching and research and is one of a handful of civil engineers to have twice been awarded the Normal Medal, one of ASCE's oldest accolades.
George J. Tamaro, Jr., P.E., a senior partner of Mueser Rutledge Consulting Engineers (MCRE), received the Lifetime Achievement in Design Award. At MCRE, he has been responsible for the design and construction of structures and foundations for numerous projects around the world, and has been awarded several U.S. and Canadian patents in slurry wall construction.
