PRIGOGINE AWARDS 2004
for Researchers Studying Ecological
Systems
Two special medals and prizes have been
instituted by the University of Siena
and the Wessex Institute of Technology
(WIT) in honour of the late Professor
Prigogine's Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
The Bank Monte Dei Paschi di Siena, is
providing sponsorship to support this
important initiative.
The Prigogine Awards will be given
annually for the best papers presented
at a relevant WIT conference on the
topic of ecological systems. Each award
consists of a gold medal and a cash
prize – the Senior Award is 10 000
EUROS and the Junior Award is 5 000
EUROS. The medal has been specially
commissioned from a group of goldsmiths
who use the same techniques as the
ancient Etruscans. It features the name
of Prigogine and the symbol for
bifurcation, to represent his
distinctive work on ecodynamics.
LAUNCH: These awards will be launched
at the Aula Magna, University of Siena,
on Wednesday 16 June 2004. This event
will mark the inauguration of the Third
International Conference on Urban
Regeneration and Sustainability (Siena,
June 14 -16 2004) in a special session
with the Second International
Conference on Prevention, Assessment,
Rehabilitation and Development of
Brownfield Sites (Siena, 16-18 June
2004).
The first medal and prize will be
awarded to a Senior Researcher,
selected in advance by the Committee
and invited to give the Keynote Address
at the conference. In 2004, Professor
Sven Erik Jorgensen has been selected
for this award - a leading worldwide
authority in ecological systems.
Applications are still open for the
second prize, which will be given to a
Young Researcher, under forty years of
age - for further details see either of
