Reference(s):

Chuaqui and Bruce (2003)
Müller and Bruce (2000)

Method Summary

This method utilizes various grout mix field quality control tests in order to determine and verify specific parameters related to the grout mix. The grout mix properties determined from grout field test can be related to topics such as the rheological nature of the grout for optimum grout placement or compressive strength of the grout for optimum structural capacity upon setting. Field quality control test equipment can include but are not limited to the Marsh Funnel to obtain the apparent viscosity, the penetrometer and or shear vane to obtain the cohesion and time to initial and final gelation, the API Filter Press to obtain the pressure filtration coefficient, the 250-ml Graduated Cylinder to obtain bleed, the Baroid Mud Balance to obtain specific gravity and the Vicat Needle to obtain initial and final set times. Descriptions of the above test equipment and their respective test procedures can be viewed in the technology’s CTS document.

Accuracy and Precision

Field quality control tests for grout mixes are both accurate and precise. Many of the field quality control tests have already been determined to be accurate and precise in other grouting applications.

Adequacy of Coverage

Regular samples are extracted from a batch mix therefore the vast majority of the injected grout is tested before placement.

Implementation Requirements

Some experience and special equipment is necessary.

General Comments

Grout 28-day compressive strengths can be used to estimate the bearing strength of the placed grout to prevent its crushing by the overburden. Other quality control field tests reflect the rheology of the grout. The objectives of this method are therefore attaining a certain grout strength and/or grout rheology.
