Reference(s):

KDOT (2007)

Method Summary

Several DOTs has provided specification for material properties verification and KDOT (2007) specification is described here. Material specification must be prequalified through the Engineer of Tests, Materials and Research Center, 2300 SW Van Buren Street, Topeka, KS 66611-1195. Manufacturers interested in prequalifying material under this specification must provide, to the Engineer of Tests, at least a 1 foot by 1 foot sample of the material, installation instructions for the material, certification that the properties of the type of material submitted meet the requirements of this specification, current NTPEP testing results associated with the type of material submitted, and any other information requested by the Engineer of Tests. The submittals will be evaluated for compliance with this specification, and the manufacturer will be notified of the results. Approved materials will be placed on the Geosynthetics prequalified list maintained by the Bureau of Materials and Research. Products will remain on the prequalified list as long as the field performance and NTPEP test results of the product are satisfactory. Woven or nonwoven Class 2 geotextile shall be provided for subsurface drainage and separation unless otherwise specified in the contract documents. Visual inspection of the material at the job site for quality of workmanship and damage incurred during shipping or job site storage.

Accuracy and Precision

The method accurately verifies the properties of the geosynthetics used for construction through adherence to ASTM standard test methods.

Adequacy of Coverage

The materials properties can be verified with reasonable number of tests suggested by different ASTM standard test methods.

Implementation Requirements

Implementation requirements are not excessive.

General Comments

The method is applicable to quality assurance specifications and warranty provisions and somewhat applicable to method approach specification. Uses of woven geotextile, geogrid, or geogrid/geotextile combination with specified properties can stabilize the pavement foundation, increase pavement service life, reduce pavement thickness, and give desired performance. It provides adequate guidelines for quality control and quality assurance of construction working platforms. The document provides guidelines for geotextiles used for subsurface drainage systems and separation geotextiles.
