For QC purposes, gradation analyses should be run on stone samples prior to installation. Gradation analyses should also be run on samples taken from the column after installation to ensure that the in-place gradation meets the specifications.

Accuracy and Precision

Gradation analyses provide the grain-size distribution of the sample tested, but not necessarily of the column as a whole.

Adequacy of Coverage

See comment for Accuracy and Precision.

Implementation Requirements

Gradation analyses are quickly and inexpensively run by all soils testing laboratories.

General Comments

Proper stone gradation is important for all stone column applications.
