It’s been 14 years since we last devoted an issue of GEOSTRATA to the theme of unsaturated soil mechanics. That long-ago issue included articles on laboratory test methods, landfill soil covers in cold regions, pavement construction, and rainfall infiltration landsliding. Of course, these are still topics of interest today, but now, more than a decade later, our "Unsaturated Soil Geotechnics" issue attempts to shine light on a few of the many advances that have surfaced in the intervening years, and hopefully we’ll help readers overcome the common misperception that saturated soils represent only the worst case.
