International Secretary Position Description
The Board of Governors (BoG) of the Geo-Institute (G-I) is seeking nominations for the position of International Secretary. The International Secretary serves as the formal liaison between the 1) US National Society (USNS) members and the BoG, the USNS trustees; and 2) the USNS and the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) and other international organizations that the BoG identifies for formal interaction. The International Secretary is responsible for communications between the G-I and the ISSMGE, including its officers, the Secretariat, and the Pan-American Committee on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering.
Specific duties of the international Secretary include:
- Submit an annual report of the USNS activities to the BoG.
- Submit an annual budget for the USNS to the BoG.
- Submit an annual statement summarizing the International Secretary’s bank accounts.
- Manage the affairs of the USNS, allocating and disbursing funds from the USNS operating income and the USNS Trust fund in accordance with the approved budget or approved special requests.
- Prepare requests to the BoG for special allocations from the USNS operating income or Trust fund beyond those contained in the annual budget approved by the BoG.
- Serve as the G-I's delegate or alternate delegate the USNS at meetings of the ISSMGE Council and the PanAmerican Committee for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering.
- Coordinate with the G-I International Activities Committee (IAC) to appoint an ad hoc committee to review and select papers to represent the United States in the proceedings of ISSMGE and Pan-American conferences.
- Provide a list of the current USNS members and their addresses when requested by the ISSMGE Secretariat.
- Arrange for payment of the USNS annual dues to the ISSMGE.
- Recommend appointments of G-I members for ISSMGE technical committees to the ISSMGE.
Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:
- Member of the USNS and experience with other member societies.
- Experience with an active ISSMGE Technical Committee, either as an appointed
- member or a corresponding member, especially activities at an international event.
- Experience with the review process of USNS papers submitted to an International Conference of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ICSMGE) or regional ISSMGE conferences, especially the Pan-American conferences.
This is a 4-year term position. Service is on voluntary basis. Travel and accommodation reimbursement and administrative support will be provided in accordance with the USNS policy.
