<p><p><div><img class="aligncenter wp-image-3376 size-full" src="https://www.geoinstitute.org/sites/default/files/geotech-tools-uploads/…; alt="Photograph showing equipment used to install CSV columns along Old St. Augustine Road in Jacksonville, Florida." width="676" height="403" /></div><div><strong>Contractor:</strong> Coastal Caisson</div><div></p><p><strong>Project Summary/Scope:</strong></p><p><u>C</u>ombined Soil <u>S</u>tabilization with <u>V</u>ertical Columns (CSV*) were installed in conjunction with a load transfer platform to support a new road bed for 400 feet at each end of a new bridge. 13,000 CSV columns were installed to depths ranging from 15 to 25 feet.</p><p>Subsurface Conditions: Organic soil overlying medium dense sand.</p><p>The design called for 6” diameter CSV columns on a 3-foot grid throughout the footprint of the roadway. A 2-foot thick load transfer blanket consisting of selected fill reinforced with three layers of biaxial geogrid was constructed above the column heads to distribute the loads. The columns were designed to transfer the load of the embankment and the traffic through layers of organic material into the medium dense sands at depth.
